The Hidden Side of Africa
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Unlike any other destinations, and with a name that sends a chill down one’s spine, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is heart-stopping for a multitude of reasons. It’s one of the most spectacular natural and wildlife destinations you’ll ever experience. Here’s everything you need to know about this natural beauty spot you’ll never forget:
Experience the heart of the primal forest
Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is encircled in primaeval forest. This corner of Uganda, technically part of the Kanungu District, perches on the edge of the Albertine Rift Valley. Although the bulk of the ‘forest proper’ is composed of tough hardwoods, it’s the thronging bamboo and lush ground cover of vines, ferns and other jungle plants that give it the well-earned ‘impenetrable’ title. Access by foot can be difficult… there’s a reason they call this the ‘place of darkness’, after all.
While that may seem intimidating, it’s important to realise that this is one of the most biologically diverse areas on earth, and the forest’s sheltering arms help preserve up to half the world’s population of endangered mountain gorillas. There’s little surprise it’s also a protected World Heritage site.
Explore one of the most exciting national parks in the world
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park lies along Uganda’s border with Rwanda and the DRC, and also shares boundaries with Virunga National Park. Here you’ll find over 120 species of mammal, 350 of birds, and 220 of butterflies, with frogs, chameleons, geckos and many more making up the remarkable diversity of the area. Over a thousand flowering species of plant make this one of the most diverse areas in East Africa, and you’ll find several endangered trees along the lowland areas.
But it’s probably best known as a drawcard for its remarkable primate populations. While colobus monkeys and chimps also call the park home, it’s the 400 Bwindi gorillas that draw most people to the forest. Fourteen habituated groups live in the area, and tourism ventures to experience them help fund the upkeep and preservation of the area, carefully overseen by the Ugandan Wildlife Authority.
