The Bush Telegraph of Safari Wildlife Photography Tips
03 July 2024
Wildlife photography tips are essential for anyone embarking on an African safari, a bucket-list adventure that attracts people from around the world. Capturing this unforgettable experience through photographs allows travelers to share their journey with friends and family long after returning home. From Kenya to Tanzania, there are numerous opportunities for your client to take stunning photos. Achieving the quintessential safari photo is not merely a matter of luck; experts suggest it requires practice, the right lighting, and a great deal of patience.
Here are some recommended tips for wildlife photography:
Know the Equipment
Learn all of the functions and settings of the camera and lenses. If your client understands their camera and equipment’s capabilities, they will be able to make the most of any situation. Additional notes: Make sure that they bring a long lens to get those impressive close-up wildlife shots. They also need to make sure there are enough memory cards and that the camera is sufficiently charged – there is nothing as disheartening as trying to snap a picture of a fantastic wildlife scene just for the camera screen to turn blank!
Make the Most of the Light
Ideally, be aware of the lighting conditions. Most game drives take place during early morning and late afternoon when lighting is golden and the shadows are long, making for great photographic opportunities.
Take note that the midday African summer sun creates harsh shadows in photos. Certain private lodges embark on nighttime game drives bringing a large spotlight with them which they use to shine on animals (usually beautiful leopards spotted in tall trees). While taking photos, understand where the strongest light source is coming from; one of the biggest factors in creating a stunning photograph is good lighting.
Find the Focus
Having the flora or fauna of each photograph in focus ensures a super sharp picture. When out in the wild, a good trick to know is to focus on the animal’s eye as a focal point in order to achieve a clear, sharp image. If the animal is in motion, it is always a good idea to have a high shutter speed on and take a quick succession of photos to increase the chances of getting a great photo.
Keep it Simple
For an impactful image, aim for simple backgrounds. The less busy the background the more the subject will stand out; make the negative space of blue sky or endless savanna plains work. In addition to this, we do suggest thinking outside of the box with regards to vantage points. This doesn’t have to be complicated just think of different perspectives – walking safaris for example offer great opportunities for interesting photos. However, make sure your client never sacrifices their safety for a photo.
Respect Nature
While in the wild on safari, your client needs to respect nature. Understand that they are a visitor in the natural habitat and do not get too close or disturb the animals’ day-to-day behavior. Also follow local guidelines and regulations to protect wildlife and habitats.
Resident Photographer
Some lodges and camps host a resident photographer throughout the year. The photographer can then join your client on their game drive and provide personal and in-depth assistance with landscape and wildlife photography. Your dedicated travel expert at African Safari Excellence will be able to arrange this. Cost is $250 + per day for a photographer.

Be Patient
Photographing wildlife can prove to be tricky as we can never predict what the animals behavior will be. Be patient with the wildlife – wildlife can be unpredictable and sometimes your client might have to wait longer than expected to get that perfect shot. We do recommend if your client wants to spend longer out on safari, that we book a private game drive.
