Tanzania Bans Plastic Bags
20 May 2019
Tanzania is officially banning plastic carrier bags. The Government announced that the new measure will come into effect from 1 June 2019 with special desks being set up at points of entry to the country to check for plastic bags – all of which are banned regardless of thickness.
The new measures are being put in place in an effort to curb the problems of pollution that come with single use plastic bags as well as protect the environment.
Ziploc bags used specifically to carry toiletries will be permitted as they are not expected to be disposed of in the country. Visitors are asked to be understanding of the rules and advised to avoid carrying or packing plastic carrier bags in their luggage.
